Get ready for your exam!

Hi year 8. Well it's that time of year where we are heading towards exams at the speed of light (or even faster!). We need to make sure that we are all up-to-date and know what's happening.

Here are a few things that you can do to get ready for your English exam.

1. Read the novel again.

2. Write some notes in your English book about the 'setting' of the book (ie it is set in a high school, not too disimilar to ours).

3. Do some more 'theme pages'. Think about some other themes like friendship, discipline, community, relationships, manipulation etc. Make sure you find some really good quotes and learn where they are in the book!

(NOTE: You will be allowed to take your novel into the exam.)

4. Read the last two chapters of the book again and make sure you know exactly what happens at the end of the novel. Summarise the final two chapters in your English book.

In the comments part below, why not write one paragraph on one of the following questions and I can check to see that it makes sense. You can also read and check each others!

* How does the setting of the book assist the storyline?

* Which of the characters portrays the theme of individuality the best?

* How does the first chapter set the scene for the remainder of the story?

* What is the main message of the novel?

If you choose one (or more!) and write a paragraph below, that will be very helpful for you. Make sure you don't have any spelling mistakes!

Mr Mansfield.

  5. Laurie Saunders portrays the theme of individuality the best because she stands up to The Wave. You can see this when she stands up to The Wave via The Grapevine newspaper (pg80 and 81). I believe that this is important because this helps have a little bit of a resistance against The Wave and if this wasn't published the whole plan might not have worked.

  8. How does the first chapter set the scene for the remainder of the story?

The first chapter sets the scene for the book well, as it shows the need for discipline in both Mr Ross' history class and in the publications office of the grapevine. It also shows that some students at Gordon High find the classes boring and they tend to be sloppy and un-caring, for example Amy Smith." Inside her friend , Amy Smith, a peite girl with thick, curly, Goldilocks hair, Was trying to endure the last moments of Mr Gabondi's French class" (pg 8). I think that this chapter sets the scene well and that it plays out the book well.

  9. The main message of the novel "The Wave" is do not let others peer pressure you other wise you face deep consequences. An example of this statement is a junior in high school was pressured by his friends but his friends were told by a senior to join the new society .This is important because you should not let anyone push you around, stand up for your self.

  10. Luke and Edward - don't write 'I think' in your paragraphs.

Make sure that you don't stop the sentence before you write the quote -

    Amy said. 'I don't like...'

    Rather,

    Amy said, 'I don't like...'

Kaylin - yours is nice, but you need to use better vocabulary. You could also add a sentence, perhaps an analysis sentence.

    Nice work everyone!

    Mr Mansfield.
